Government shutdown to drag on as Speaker Johnson and Democrats clash over ICE restrictions

The partial federal shutdown is set to continue into the work week as House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed there will be no “quick vote” to restore funding. At the heart of the deadlock is a high-stakes battle over how the Trump administration conducts immigration enforcement following recent tragedies in Minneapolis.

The Current Stance:

• Trump’s “Play Call”: Speaker Johnson told Fox News Sunday that he is following President Trump’s lead. The current plan is to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for just two weeks, providing a window to debate permanent changes to ICE.

• The Republican Position: While open to body cameras and ending “roving patrols,” Johnson is firmly against Democratic demands to unmask federal agents, citing concerns that their personal information will be leaked by “agitators.”

• The Democratic Demands: Led by Hakeem Jeffries, Democrats are digging in. They are demanding that agents remove masks, identify themselves, and obtain judicial warrants before entering homes or vehicles. Jeffries stated, “Masks should come off.”

A Nation in Limbo:
• Agencies Impacted: While essential services continue, departments like Defense, Health, Transportation, and Housing are under shutdown guidance. Federal workers face the possibility of furloughs or going without pay if the impasse isn’t resolved by Tuesday.

• The “Dystopia” Debate: Senator Chris Murphy described the situation in Minnesota as a “dystopia,” calling ICE “lawless and immoral.” Meanwhile, calls are growing among some lawmakers for the impeachment or firing of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
