Prosecutors filed a formal murder charge Tuesday against the man accused of assassinating conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Authorities revealed damning evidence, including what they say is a text message confession sent by the suspect to his romantic partner just minutes after the incident.
The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Julian Mercer, was apprehended last week following a multi-agency manhunt. Investigators allege Mercer shot Kirk outside a speaking engagement in Denver on September 10th.
According to court documents, Mercer texted his partner immediately after the event: “It’s done. I got him. No more Kirk.” Prosecutors say the message, combined with surveillance footage and ballistic analysis, forms a “compelling and complete narrative” of premeditated murder.
District Attorney Laura Peña stated during a press conference Tuesday morning: “This was not an impulsive act. This was a calculated, politically motivated assassination. The evidence speaks for itself.”
Though Mercer has not yet entered a plea, his defense attorney signaled an intention to pursue an insanity defense, citing unspecified mental health issues.
